My takeaway points from this lecture were:
1.
Orgasms have many health benefits including pain
relief, stress reduction, sleep improvement, boosted immune function, increased
life span, and higher level of cognitive functioning.
2.
As a female ages, her hormones levels fluctuate
(including a drop in testosterone levels), lubrication diminishes, the muscles
of the vaginal barrel and vulva become thinner, and the clitoris changes in
sensitivity. As a male ages, his testosterone levels decrease, blood flow is
decreased, sperm production slows, erections become less firm, and the
detumescence process is quicker.
3.
Men’s sexual response is desire, arousal, orgasm
while women’s is neutral feeling & cognitive thought, arousal, desire,
orgasm.
Interventions:
1.
One-on-one education with an older adult on the typical
physical and sexual changes as we age. This could include specific suggestions
for energy conservation, adapted equipment, pacing, joint protection, and/or
pain management for the client’s specific diagnosis.
2.
Population education/awareness of older adult
sexuality at PCP offices. This could include couples talk therapy
services/referrals, couples sex therapy services/referrals, information on
typical physical changes that effect sex, etc.
